“Cathodoluminescence using the Ultra Variable-Pressure Detector (UVD) (1)”
Volcanic rocks were observed under low vacuum. While the average atomic numbers of plagioclase (NaAlSi3O8) and cristobalite (SiO2) are not different enough to produce good contrast in BSE image, Cathodoluminescence (CL) image show a striking contrast between them. Ultra Variable-Pressure Detector (UVD, low vacuum secondary electron detector) can detect CL by turning the detector bias off.
